Olympus was founded in 1919 as Takachiho Seisakusho by Takeshi Yamashita, and its first camera, the 1936 Semi-Olympus I, carried the first Zuiko lens. The Pen of 1959 got 72 half-frame pictures from a 36-exposure roll, and the Pen team under Yoshihisa Maitani went on to design the OM system. It launched in 1972 with the M-1, renamed OM-1 after Leica objected to the name, and the goal was a smaller, lighter, quieter SLR. The OM-2 added automatic off-the-film metering in 1975, the OM-10 brought aperture priority in 1979, and the system ran until 2002. Our catalog also covers the Pen FT half-frame SLR and the Trip 35, XA and Stylus Epic. Olympus handed its camera business to OM Digital Solutions in 2020.
