Olympus · 35mm rangefinder · 1979–1985
Yoshihisa Maitani designed the XA for Olympus in 1979, and it's still counted among the smallest rangefinder cameras ever made, alongside the Contax T. A sliding clamshell covers a six-element 35 mm f/2.8 Zuiko, and a real coupled rangefinder focuses it from 0.9 m to infinity. You pick the aperture, and an electronically controlled leaf shutter runs anywhere from 10 s to 1/500 s. A small lever adds 1.5 stops for backlit scenes. The cameras that followed are simpler. The XA2 of 1980 went to zone focus and programmed exposure with a 35 mm f/3.5, the XA1 used a selenium cell and needed no battery, and the XA3 and the 28 mm XA4 arrived in 1985. Olympus sold clip-on A11 and A16 flashes for the line. When a listing just says XA, check the front for a number before you assume it's the rangefinder.
The variants
Only the original XA has a rangefinder and aperture priority. The XA2 (1980) and XA3 (1985) are zone-focus program cameras with a 35 mm f/3.5, the XA1 (1982) has a fixed-focus 35 mm f/4 and a selenium meter, and the XA4 (1985) has a 28 mm f/3.5.
The shutter release is an electronic touch switch, so it's easy to fire by accident and waste frames. The shutter is driven by an electromagnet and needs its two SR44 or LR44 cells.
Buying guide
We'd buy the XA titled all works with a dealer grade of Exc+5 at $210 delivered, or the one titled new seals with a 1-year US warranty for the same $210. There are at least 197 for sale, almost all from Japan dealers, and most ask $230–280 delivered, often with the A11 flash included. It can't fire without its two SR44 or LR44 cells, and its touch-switch release is easy to fire by accident. Check the front for a plain XA, since the XA1 to XA4 are simpler models without the rangefinder, and ask for a finder photo with the rangefinder patch lined up at infinity. Skip the zero-feedback seller in Thailand and the for-parts camera asking $504 from a 92.6% seller.
