Brand
Nikon started on 25 July 1917 as Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō, which means Japan Optical Industries, and introduced the Nikkor lens name in 1932. Its first Nikon-branded camera, the Nikon I, came in 1948. In 1959 the Nikon F introduced the F mount, the bayonet every Nikon SLR in our catalog shares, from the F2 and F3 to the FM, FE, FG, EM and FM3a. The mount changed in steps you'll want to know when buying lenses. AI coupling arrived in 1977 and AI-S in 1981, and older pre-AI lenses can damage many later bodies. The company became Nikon Corporation in 1988. In January 2006 it said it would stop making most film cameras, though the F6 and FM10 carried on for years.
