Ricoh was founded on 6 February 1936 as Riken Sensitized Paper, set up by the commercial arm of Japan's Riken research institute. Over the film years it built everything from the Ricoh 35 EFS rangefinder to the XR and KR series SLRs, which use Ricoh's R-K version of the Pentax K mount with a small extra pin for Ricoh's P setting. The GR line is the part collectors know best. The GR1 arrived in 1996 with a 28 mm f/2.8 GR lens of seven elements in four groups, and it was followed by the GR1s, GR1v, GR10 and GR21. Ricoh bought Pentax in October 2011, so the company that once borrowed the K mount now owns it.
