Olympus · 35mm compact · From 1997
Olympus launched the mju-II in 1997, and in the US it went out as the Stylus Epic. It weighs 145 g and closes up into a smooth clamshell, with a fixed 35 mm f/2.8 lens of four elements in four groups that focuses down to 35 cm. Active multi-beam autofocus with focus lock picks the subject, and exposure is fully automatic from 4 s to 1/1000 s, with a spot mode for backlit faces. The flash has six modes, including a night-scene slow sync up to 4 s, and the body is splash proof. Sales reached around 3.8 million. In 1998 Olympus marked a sales milestone with a burgundy Limited edition of about 65,000. One quirk to know is that the DX reader has four contacts instead of six, so it sets film speed in full stops.
The variants
Outside the US it's the mju-II. In 1998 Olympus made a burgundy Limited edition of about 65,000, and Quartzdate versions print the date on the film. The Stylus Epic Zoom is a different camera with a zoom lens.
Everything runs on one CR123A, so a dead or missing cell means no pictures. It has no one famous failure, so judge each camera on whether it powers up, focuses and fires.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Stylus Epic titled tested to turn on and fire the flash at $404 delivered, or the US one titled all works at $484. There are at least 56 for sale, most from Japan dealers, and most ask $430–600 delivered. That price reflects the camera's fame more than any scarcity, since it sold around 3.8 million, and its electronics can't be fixed cheaply, so a working, tested camera is worth more than a "mint" one with no test claim. Everything runs on one 3 V CR123A, so ask for a video sliding the clamshell open, focusing and firing. The burgundy Limited edition asks $600–800 delivered here, and the for-parts camera at $163 is only a donor.
