Olympus · 35mm SLR · 1975–late 1980s (OM-2n included)
Olympus showed the OM-2 at the Paris Photo Salon in 1975 as the automatic version of the OM-1, in the same compact body. Its party piece is off-the-film metering. Twin silicon blue cells in the mirror box read light reflected off the film itself, and off a patterned surface at faster speeds, while the exposure is happening. It was the first camera with OTF metering of any kind, and it brought TTL flash automation along with it. You get aperture priority with exposures as long as 60 s, or manual from 1 s to 1/1000 s. The 1979 OM-2n pushed auto exposures to 120 s, and in very low light an exposure can run to three and a half minutes. The OM-2 Spot/Program of 1984 shares the name but is a different camera.
The variants
The OM-2n of 1979 stretched the longest auto exposure from 60 to 120 seconds and added a flash-ready light in the finder. The OM-2 Spot/Program (OM-2SP, 1984) is a different camera with program mode, a spot meter, an LCD finder and a 1/60 s backup speed.
The OM-2 and OM-2n are all electronic and can't take a picture without their two SR44 cells. Olympus only added a battery-free 1/60 s backup speed on the later OM-2 Spot/Program.
Buying guide
We'd buy the OM-2N titled CLA'd with a G.Zuiko 35mm f/2.8 at $150 delivered, or the black OM-2 titled fully works with a G.Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 at $145. There are at least 185 for sale, about half from Japan dealers, and most ask $160–290 delivered, so both sit under the band. It's all electronic and can't take a picture without its two SR44 silver-oxide cells, so a body that won't fire on fresh cells is a repair job. Ask for a video firing in auto with the lens capped, where the shutter should stay open for many seconds. Skip the zero-feedback seller, and the CLA'd 28mm kits whose wording two Japan sellers share.
$45.00delivered
The lowest delivered OM-2, a US body only at $45 with free shipping, sold without the hot shoe. There's no test claim, so ask for a video firing in auto and manual on fresh SR44s.
