Brand
Canon began in 1933 as the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, and its first project was the Kwanon, a prototype copied from the Leica design that became Japan's first 35mm camera with a focal-plane shutter. The company became Canon Camera Co. in 1947. For film SLR buyers the story starts in March 1971, when the professional F-1 launched the FD lens mount. The FTb used the same mount, and in 1976 the AE-1 became the first SLR with a digital integrated circuit inside, offering shutter-priority autoexposure alongside manual. The A-1 followed in 1978 and the AE-1 Program in 1981. In 1987 Canon moved to EOS autofocus and the EF mount, which FD lenses don't fit without an adapter. Every Canon SLR in our catalog is an FD body.
