Olympus · 35mm compact · 1967–1984
Olympus sold the Trip 35 from 1967 to 1984 and moved more than ten million of them, and in the 1970s David Bailey fronted its ad campaign. The ring of bumpy cells around the lens is a selenium meter that makes its own current, so there's no battery anywhere in the camera. In auto it picks the aperture and one of two shutter speeds, 1/40 s or 1/200 s, and a small red flag pops up in the finder when there isn't enough light. You focus by zone, turning the lens to one of four symbols for 1 m, 1.5 m, 3 m or infinity. The lens is a 40 mm f/2.8 D. Zuiko with four elements in three groups, and the bright Albada finder has parallax marks. Early ones top out at ISO 200 and later ones at 400.
The two aperture blades tend to get sticky over time, and the selenium cell can weaken after decades. Both affect the auto exposure, so that's the part to test.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Trip 35 titled Red Flag OK and tested at $112 delivered with free shipping, or pay $175 for the US one titled refurbished and tested. There are at least 133 for sale, nearly all from Japan dealers, and most ask $120–160 delivered. It needs no battery at all, since the selenium cell around the lens powers the meter, but that cell can weaken and the two aperture blades get sticky, so the auto exposure is the part to check. Red Flag OK in a title is the seller's word that the low-light flag works, and a video through the open back as it fires on A in bright light shows whether the blades snap. One seller recovers bodies in custom colors, so check the photos if you want the original look, and skip the black one at $431, three times the median.
