Contax · 35mm compact · From 1990–1991
Kyocera released the T2 under the Contax name around 1990, following the original Contax T. The body is clad in titanium, and inside is a Carl Zeiss T* Sonnar 38 mm f/2.8 of five elements in four groups. The controls are well damped, and even the battery cover is milled from a solid metal disc. It gives you more say than most compacts. A ring around the lens sets the aperture from f/2.8 to f/16, with f/2.8 doubling as program mode, and a dial gives manual focus at set distances from 0.7 m to infinity. There's exposure compensation too, and autofocus for everything else. Its fame grew when it showed up in celebrity hands, Kendall Jenner's on The Tonight Show in 2017 and Oscar Isaac's in 2022 among them. Buy it for the lens and the build, and remember the electronics are over 30 years old.
The ageing electronics are its weak point. One hard drop onto concrete or a couple of splashes of water can finish one off, and there's no mechanical fallback.
Buying guide
We'd buy the T2 titled All Works and N MINT with its case at $1,320 delivered from Japan, or the one titled overhauled and tested at $1,921 for the best odds it keeps working. There are more than 190 for sale, nearly all from Japan dealers, and most ask $1,375–1,875 delivered, usually with $130–340 of shipping included. That price comes from the T2's fame, titanium body and Zeiss Sonnar, while the risk is in its aging electronics, which have no mechanical fallback, run on one 3 V CR123A and can't be repaired cheaply. Favor a listing titled tested or All Works over one that's only graded MINT, and ask for a video powering up, turning the aperture ring from f/2.8 to f/16 and firing. Skip the zero-feedback US seller at $2,100 and the 75% seller's untested black limited edition at $2,098.

Titled All Works and N MINT with its case, at $1,320 delivered, just under the band. On a T2 a working claim counts for more than the grade, since the electronics can't be fixed cheaply.
