Minolta · 35mm rangefinder · From 1966
Minolta brought out the Hi-Matic 7s in 1966, in chrome or black, as an update of the Hi-Matic 7. It's a fixed-lens rangefinder with a fast 45 mm f/1.8 Rokkor PF of six elements in five groups, and a Seiko leaf shutter from 1/4 s to 1/500 s plus B. You can shoot it fully automatic or in metered manual. The CdS meter sits in the lens barrel, so it reads through any filter you screw on, and Minolta gave the system the same Contrast Light Compensator name it used on the SR-T SLRs. Over the plain 7 it gained a hot shoe, a Safe Load indicator and yellow-and-blue rangefinder windows in place of pink and green. The finder has a bright frame with automatic parallax correction. The meter needs a battery, but the shutter fires without one.
The variants
Over the earlier Hi-Matic 7 it adds a hot shoe and a Safe Load indicator, and its rangefinder windows are tinted yellow and blue instead of pink and green.
Battery
Many meters from the 1960s and 70s were built for 1.35 V mercury cells like the PX625, which held a steady voltage until almost flat. Mercury cells went off sale after EU and US laws in the 1990s, and a 1.55 V silver-oxide or alkaline cell can throw readings off in a meter that doesn't regulate voltage. There are three fixes. Zinc-air hearing-aid cells give 1.35 V but die within a few months. An adapter like the MR-9 uses a small circuit to drop a silver-oxide cell to 1.35 V. Or a repairer can recalibrate the meter for silver oxide. More on batteries and meters.
The CdS meter was designed for a 1.35 V PX625 mercury cell, so a 1.5 V substitute can throw off the auto exposure unless it's adapted. It has no one famous mechanical fault, so test the rangefinder, the shutter and the lens.
Buying guide
We'd buy the US 7s titled film tested and serviced at $87 delivered, near the bottom of the band. There are about 200 for sale and most ask $75–160 delivered, with untested US ones from $42 and Japan dealers' Near MINT and MINT grades at the top. The shutter fires without a battery, but the meter was built for a 1.35 V PX625 mercury cell, and a 1.5 V substitute can throw off the auto exposure unless it's adapted, so ask which cell the seller used. Ask for a video firing 1/4 s and 1/500 with the back open and a backlit photo of the Rokkor for haze. Skip the $324 EXC- one, about 3.4 times the median, and the 93.8% seller listing two 7s under almost the same title.
