Yashica · 35mm compact · 1990s
The T4 is a plastic point-and-shoot with an unusually good lens. Yashica, by then part of Kyocera, gave it a Carl Zeiss T* Tessar, 35 mm f/3.5 in four elements and three groups, and that lens is the reason people want one. Everything else is automatic. Three-point infrared autofocus locks on in about half a second, a stepless programmed shutter runs from 1 second to 1/700, and the DX reader handles film up to ISO 3200. There's no manual aperture, no focus override and no ISO setting. Its cult status traces back to one fashion photographer's use of it, and the hype has kept it in demand. Yashica followed it with the T4 Super, also sold as the T5, and Kyocera sold related versions as the Slim T. Green Safari editions exist too.
The variants
Yashica also made the T4 Super, also called the T5, plus D versions of both, and Kyocera sold related models as the Slim T and Kyocera T. The T4 Zoom is a different camera with a zoom lens.
The T4 is plastic and electronics throughout, with no manual controls to fall back on, so a fault in the autofocus, flash or film transport stops the whole camera. It also resets the flash to auto every time it's switched on, which catches out new owners.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Kyocera Slim T, the T4's Japan name, titled tested and Excellent at $590 delivered. There are more than 150 for sale, most asking $575–800 delivered, and that price comes from the T4's fame and its Zeiss Tessar far more than from scarcity. It runs on one 3 V CR123A and does nothing without it, and it's plastic and electronics throughout, so a fault in the autofocus, flash or film transport stops the whole camera and can't be fixed cheaply. That makes a listing titled tested worth more than one graded MINT, so ask for a video of it powering up, extending the lens, charging the flash and firing. The T4 Super (T5) and the D versions share this page. Skip the two US listings with the same "35mm F3.5 Len Camera black" title, typo and all, a copied-listing pattern.
