Minolta · 35mm SLR · 1981–1999
Minolta launched the X-700 in 1981 as its top manual-focus SLR and kept building it until 1999. EISA named it European Camera of the Year, and it became Minolta's best seller since the SR-T line. It gives you program, aperture priority and manual, and it was the centerpiece of the Minolta Program System of winders, flashes and backs. Fit an X-series flash and in program mode the camera handles flash and exposure together, metering the flash off the film. The cloth shutter is stepless from 4 s to 1/1000 s in auto, with flash sync at 1/60 s. Program needs MD lenses, but older MC Rokkors work in the other two modes. Production moved to China in the 1990s. Rokkor Files' main gripe is that in manual the finder shows the recommended speed, not the one you've set.
The variants
The X-570 (sold as the X-500 outside North America) sits below it with no program mode, and the X-370 (X-300) drops program, off-the-film flash and depth-of-field preview. Program mode needs MD lenses, while older MC lenses work in aperture priority and manual.
Capacitor failures are reported in bodies from serial 23xxxxx onward, and the ISO and exposure compensation dial's mechanism can slip out of place with long use. There's no mechanical speed at all, not even B, so with dead cells the camera won't fire.
Buying guide
We'd buy the X-700 titled tested with an MD 50mm f/1.7 at $129 delivered, or the body-only one titled tested and working at $95 if you already own Minolta lenses. There are more than 200 for sale, and most ask $120–240 delivered, with US kits at the low end and Japan dealers' "Mint" kits at the top. The X-700 has no mechanical speed, not even B, so it won't fire without its LR44 cells, and bodies from serial 23xxxxx onward are the ones known for capacitor failure. Ask for the serial and a video firing in P, A and M with fresh cells, and look for clear glass in a backlit photo of any kit lens. Skip the $469 Top MINT kit from Japan, since other 50mm f/1.4 kits here ask $193–332 delivered.

The lowest delivered X-700 here, at $92 with a 35-135mm zoom and a flash, from a US seller. There's no test claim, so ask for a video of it firing in P, A and M with fresh LR44s.
