Minolta · 35mm SLR · 1977–1984
Minolta's XD went on sale in 1977, as the XD-11 in North America, the XD-7 in Europe and plain XD in Japan. Rokkor Files calls it the world's first camera with both aperture priority and shutter priority alongside metered manual. If your chosen shutter speed runs out of aperture, a hidden program shifts the exposure to save the shot. Minolta developed it with Leica, the body became the basis for the Leica R4, and some of the MD Rokkor lenses Minolta introduced for it were sold by Leica too. The quiet Seiko MFC shutter has metal blades traveling vertically, electronically timed from 1 s to 1/1000 s. Lose the batteries and you still get a mechanical 1/100 s on the O setting, plus B. It was the last metal-bodied Minolta SR-mount SLR before the plastic X-700, and it was sold until 1984.
The variants
It's the same camera as the XD-7 sold in Europe and the XD sold in Japan. The Japan-only XD-s of 1979 swaps the eyepiece shutter for a diopter adjustment.
Early XDs used a soft leatherette that tends to shrink and peel, which Minolta fixed with a harder covering on later bodies. It has no one famous electronic failure, so check every mode and speed as you would on any electronic body this old.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Japan dealer's XD titled CLA'd, with an MD Rokkor 50mm f/1.4, at $190 delivered. The XD-11, XD-7 and Japan's XD are one camera, so all three are on this page, and there are more than 150 for sale, most asking $180–330 delivered, the majority from Japan dealers. It runs on two LR44 / SR44 cells or one CR1/3N, and without them you still get a mechanical 1/100 s on O, plus B, so a dead battery doesn't strand you. Ask for a video in A and S pointing at a bright window and then a dark corner, and expect peeling leatherette on early bodies, which is only cosmetic. Skip the zero-feedback US seller at $200, and pass on the 50th Anniversary kits at $474–519, about double the median.

The lowest delivered XD-11 here, a silver body with a 50mm f/1.7 for $88 from a US seller. It's titled untested, so ask for a video of it firing in A and S, and on O with the batteries out.

Titled CLA'd, with the MD Rokkor 50mm f/1.4, at $190 delivered, near the bottom of the band. The title doesn't say tested, so ask for a video in A, S and manual, and read [MINT] as the dealer's own grade.
