Five years after the AE-1, buyers wanted a camera that would set everything for them, and Canon answered in April 1981 with the AE-1 Program. Its program mode picks both speed and aperture, and it keeps the AE-1's shutter priority and manual. Canon borrowed the A-1's palm grip shape and added LED indicators in the finder. The standard screen was brighter than any Canon had fitted to a manual-focus camera before, bright enough to focus lenses as slow as f/5.6, and eight screen types swap in through the mirror box. It works with the Motor Drive MA and the faster Power Winder A2, and it came in chrome or black. The shutter is the same electronically timed cloth one as the AE-1's, so it needs its battery for every shot.
The variants
The AE-1 Program adds a program mode, LED finder indicators, interchangeable focusing screens and the A-1's palm grip shape to the AE-1. Both use the same 2 s to 1/1000 s cloth shutter, FD mount and 6 V battery.
Like every A-series Canon it can develop a mirror-brake squeal, which a re-lube cures. The plastic battery door fails easily, and the extra program electronics have caused more gremlins over the years than the simpler AE-1.
Buying guide
We'd buy a Program titled tested with an FD 50mm f/1.8, which runs $170 to $215 delivered. There are at least 175 listed, and most ask $160–240 delivered, with US kits at the bottom and Japan dealers' black bodies with a 50mm f/1.4 near the top. It needs its 6 V 4LR44 for every shot, so ask for a video in program mode with the P lit in the finder, and listen for the A-series squeal after each shot. Check the plastic battery door on the front isn't taped. The one kit titled full CLA with new seals asks $362 delivered, about $120 over the band, and that's the price of having the work already done.

$169.99delivered
A silver Program with an FD 50mm f/1.8, titled working and tested, at $170 with free shipping from Japan. That's near the bottom of the $160–240 band for a tested kit, so ask for a backlit photo to confirm the lens is clear.
