Mamiya · Medium-format SLR · 1970–2010
Mamiya came to the RB67 from its twin-lens reflexes and kept the bellows focusing and lens shutters it knew. RB stands for rotating back. The film back turns 90 degrees, so you switch between horizontal and vertical frames without tipping the camera on its side. The 6 × 7 format was chosen because it enlarges well to 8 × 10, and the RB67 became one of the most popular studio cameras of the 1970s. It's fully mechanical. Each Sekor lens has its own Seiko leaf shutter, cocked from the body, so flash syncs at every speed, and 46 mm of bellows travel lets any lens focus close. The catch is weight, about 2.7 kg with the 90 mm f/3.8, though a decent neck strap makes it usable on the move. Mamiya made it from 1970 until 2010, with backs for 120, 220, 6 × 4.5, 6 × 8, 70 mm and Polaroid film.
The variants
The RB67 Professional came out in 1970. The Pro-S of 1974 added a focus lock and an indicator showing which way the back is turned, and it sold for over 15 years, so it's the most common. The Pro-SD of 1990 takes the later L lenses.
With no electronics in the body, problems are mechanical wear. Every lens has its own shutter, so a good body can come with a lens that runs slow or sticks, and old bellows and back seals can leak light.
Buying guide
We'd buy the US outfit with a 90mm f/3.8, chimney finder, 120 back and new seals at $462 delivered, or a Japan dealer's Exc+5 Pro with a 127mm, waist-level finder, 120 back and new seals at $590. There are more than 200 for sale, and most kits with a lens ask $525–725 delivered, while bodies alone ask $150–390, mostly from Japan. The shutter is in each lens and the body has no electronics, so the RB67 needs no battery, but it needs a lens, a film back and a finder to take a picture, so check what each listing includes. Ask for a video of each lens firing at 1 s and 1/400 with the back off, and a photo of the film back's foam seals. Skip the $2,550 "Almost Unused" Pro-SD K/L kit, about 4.3 times the median.

The lowest delivered RB67 here, a Pro body with its rotating back adapter and focusing screen for $150 from a US seller. It's engraved, and the title names no lens, film back or finder, so budget for those.
