Mamiya · Medium-format SLR · 1976–1990
Mamiya brought out the M645 in 1975 as a medium-format SLR you could carry like a big 35mm camera, and a year later added the 1000S. The name points to its new top speed of 1/1000, and it also gained a self-timer and depth-of-field preview. The 6 × 4.5 cm frame gets 15 shots from a roll of 120, three more than 6 × 6. Film loads into inserts that pop in and out, and the finders swap too, from a waist-level hood to metered CdS, PD and AE prisms that read the aperture through a coupling on the lens. With a prism and the 80 mm f/2.8 it weighs about four pounds. Mamiya sold it with that lens or the faster 80 mm f/1.9, and it stayed in production until 1990. The cloth shutter is electronically timed, so it needs its 6 V battery to fire at all.
The variants
The original M645 of 1975 tops out at 1/500. The 1000S added 1/1000, a self-timer and depth-of-field preview, and the export-only M645J of 1979 dropped the upper shutter button.
With no battery the shutter won't fire, and the compartment sits where grips and tripod plates can block it. Light seals dry out with age, and on metered prisms the connection to the body can work loose.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Japan dealer's 1000S titled Meter Works with the Sekor C 80mm f/2.8 at $510 delivered, mid-band, or the US body-only one at $252 if you already have a finder, a 120 insert and a lens. There are about 150 for sale, nearly all from Japan dealers, and most ask $410–625 delivered, while bodies with a metered prism and no lens ask $360–540. The finder, film insert and lens are all separate parts, so check what each title includes, and read grades like Near MINT as the dealer's own claim. The cloth shutter is electronically timed and won't fire at all without its 6 V PX28 or 4LR44, so ask for a video firing 1 s and 1/1000 with the lens off, plus photos of the curtain and the insert's foam seals. Skip the $1,355 kit with the 80mm f/1.9, since another f/1.9 kit here asks $720.
$251.82est. delivered
The lowest delivered 1000S that isn't sold for parts, $252 from a US seller. It's titled body only with no test claim, so budget for a finder, a 120 insert and a lens, and ask for a video of it firing on a fresh 6 V battery.

$509.99est. delivered
Titled Meter Works, with the standard Sekor C 80mm f/2.8, at $510 delivered, mid-band. A working meter needs a metered prism, but the title doesn't name which one, so check the photos and ask for the 1 s and 1/1000 video.

The faster 80mm f/1.9 that Mamiya also sold the 1000S with, on a body with a CdS prism, graded Exc+5 by the dealer. At $720 delivered it's about $95 over the band but $635 less than the other f/1.9 kit here, so ask for a backlit photo of that lens.
