Hasselblad · Medium-format SLR · 1970–1994
The 500 series is perhaps the most iconic Hasselblad, and the 500C/M ran longest, from 1970 to 1994. It's fully mechanical. Each Zeiss lens carries its own leaf shutter, so flash syncs at every speed up to 1/500 and the body never needs a battery. Everything comes off. Lenses, finders and film magazines all swap, and you can change magazines mid-roll, with 12-shot 6 × 6 backs, 16-shot 6 × 4.5 backs, and 220, 70 mm and Polaroid options. The M stands for modified, and the change that mattered was a focusing screen you can swap yourself for a brighter or gridded one. Hasselblad kept the same basic design going until the 503CW was discontinued around 2006. A Hasselblad took the famous photo of the Earth rising over the Moon, and that history is a big part of the appeal.
The variants
The 500C/M replaced the 500C in 1970. You can swap its focusing screen yourself, where the 500C's needs a technician, and it came with the improved A-series magazines. Otherwise little changed, and both take the same lenses.
Most trouble comes from the body and lens getting out of step. Taking a lens off and refitting it when one is cocked and the other isn't can cause lasting damage, and extension tubes should only come off after the lens. Loading a magazine with the backing paper in the wrong place can waste a whole roll.
Buying guide
We'd buy the late body titled tested with a CF 80mm f/2.8 and A12 II back at $2,925 delivered from Japan, or the US outfit titled tested with its 80mm and extras at $3,025. There are more than 170 for sale, and the $1,575–3,075 band mixes bodies and kits. Bodies alone ask about $660–1,450 delivered, and kits with the 80mm Planar about $2,000–4,200. It's fully mechanical with the shutter in each lens, so it needs no battery, and its known trouble is the body and lens getting out of step. Ask for a video winding and firing several times with the lens on, at 1 s and 1/500 with the sound on, and ask whether the lens comes off and goes back on cleanly. Skip the $8,960 listing titled only "Good working", about 3.8 times the median.
