Pentax · Medium-format SLR · 1969–2009 (6×7, 67 and 67II)
Asahi brought out the 6×7 in 1969, a 6 × 7 cm SLR with interchangeable finders, and the line ran until 2009. With a prism and the standard 105 mm f/2.4 it weighs 2.3 kg, which is why it's a favorite of studio photographers and, as one reviewer put it, amateur weightlifters everywhere. The cloth focal-plane shutter is timed by transistors and a magnet, 1 s to 1/1000 s on the original, with flash sync at only 1/30 s. Leaf-shutter lenses, such as the 90 mm and 165 mm, get around that for flash work. A 1976 update added mirror lock-up to tame vibration, the Pentax 67 of around 1990 got a silicon-cell metering prism, and the 67II at the end of the decade added an AE prism with aperture priority. The 105 mm came as a Super Takumar and later a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar.
The variants
The original 1969 6×7 has no mirror lock-up, and the 1976 version added it. The Pentax 67 of around 1990 brought a metering prism with a silicon photodiode in place of the CdS cell, and the 67II at the end of that decade added an AE prism with aperture priority.
Pentax repairer Eric Hendrickson's list of usual faults covers film not pulling through, a bad winding clutch or the mirror staying up on bodies without mirror lock-up, battery drain on mirror lock-up bodies, and clutch damage on the 67 from improper film handling. It's completely battery dependent, and the shutter won't fire without film loaded.
Buying guide
We'd buy the mirror lock-up body with the TTL prism titled meter works at $510 delivered and add a lens, or pay $1,190 for a TTL kit titled meter works with the standard 105mm f/2.4. All of the at least 217 for sale here ship from Japan, and the $625–1,225 delivered band mixes two markets, bodies at about $380–700 and 105mm kits at about $1,000–1,700. It runs entirely on its 6 V PX28 or 4SR44 cell (two CR123A in the 67II) and won't fire without film loaded, so a body that won't fire empty isn't faulty. Mirror Up or MUP in a title means the 1976 or later body with mirror lock-up, and earlier ones can leave the mirror stuck up, so ask for a video of several shots in a row. Skip the 92.9% seller, and pass on the CLA'd 67II at $1,930, about twice the median.
