Canon launched the AE-1 in April 1976 and went on to sell millions of them. It was the first SLR with a digital integrated circuit, and Canon used that microcomputer to build the camera from five major units and 25 minor ones, cutting about 300 parts. That's how shutter-priority auto exposure got cheap enough for a mass-market camera. You set the speed, a needle in the finder points to the aperture the camera will pick, and you can still shoot manual. It takes Canon's whole FD lens line, and older FL lenses work with stop-down metering. Every speed is timed electronically, so with a dead battery it won't fire at all. A nice bit of trivia: Apple sound designer Jim Reekes recorded the shutter sound for the Mac and the iPhone from the AE-1 he'd used in high school.
The variants
The 1981 AE-1 Program keeps the same shutter and FD mount and adds a program mode, LED finder indicators and swappable screens. The AT-1 is the AE-1's manual-only twin with a match-needle meter.
The best-known fault is the Canon squeal, a high chirp from the mirror mechanism once its brake lubricant dries out, and a re-lube fixes it. The plastic battery door on the front breaks often, and many used bodies have taped or broken ones.
Buying guide
We'd buy a tested AE-1 with a 50mm lens from a US seller, and $144 to $195 delivered gets one. There are at least 200 listed, and most ask $150–220 delivered, with Japan dealers' black bodies and FD 50mm f/1.4 kits filling the top of that. The AE-1 won't fire without its 6 V 4LR44, so one that won't fire may only need a fresh cell. Ask for a video of a few shots and listen for the Canon squeal, a high chirp from the mirror brake that a re-lube fixes, and check the plastic battery door isn't taped shut. Untested kits with off-brand zooms are worth parts money and not much more.
