Canon · 35mm SLR · From December 1976
Canon introduced the AT-1 in December 1976, about eight months after the AE-1, as a cheaper choice for export markets, and it was never sold in Japan. From the outside it's a near twin of the AE-1, with the same body, and the AE-1's accessories fit it. The difference is exposure. There's no auto mode, so you turn the aperture ring or speed dial until the needle in the finder lines up with its pointer, and Canon used a CdS cell here instead of the AE-1's silicon one. It looks like an old-school manual camera, but it's built on the AE-1's electronics. The shutter is electronically timed from 2 s to 1/1000 s and won't fire without its 6 V battery. If you want to learn exposure by hand on Canon FD lenses, it's the plain way in.
The variants
The AT-1 shares the AE-1's body, shutter and accessories but drops shutter-priority auto, and its meter uses a CdS cell where the AE-1 uses silicon. It runs on the same 6 V battery.
As an A-series body it can develop the same mirror-brake squeal as the AE-1, which a re-lube fixes. It's fully battery-dependent, so a camera described as dead may only need a fresh 6 V cell, or may have a corroded battery compartment.
Buying guide
We'd buy a tested AT-1 with Canon's FD 50mm f/1.8, and $133 to $203 delivered gets one. There are at least 90 listed, nearly all from the US and Canada, and most ask $110–200 delivered for a body with a 50mm. It won't fire without its 6 V 4LR44. A dead one may only need a fresh cell, or it may have a corroded battery compartment, so ask for a photo of the contacts. Listen in the seller's video for the mirror squeal it shares with the AE-1, which a re-lube fixes. Skip the $265 one from a zero-feedback seller, and the $342 kit with new seals, about two and a half times the median.
$87.40est. delivered
The lowest-priced AT-1 titled tested and working, a body only from a Canadian seller at $87 delivered. The title doesn't say what was tested, so ask for a video at 1 s and 1/1000 with the back open and listen for a squeal.
