The Mat-124G was the last twin-lens reflex Yashica made, built from 1970 to 1986. You look down into a waist-level finder through an 80 mm f/3.2 viewing lens while an 80 mm f/3.5 four-element Yashinon takes the picture. What set it apart from most TLRs of its age is the built-in coupled meter. You line up a needle instead of carrying a handheld meter. A pressure plate that slides between two positions lets it take 220 film as well as 120. The Copal SV leaf shutter runs from 1 second to 1/500, with a self-timer and both X and M flash sync. It replaced the Mat-124, which had a pull-and-turn pressure plate and a square-patterned covering, and the G brought pebble-grain leatherette and some electrical changes. Both take Bay I filters, and both were designed for a mercury cell that's no longer made.
The variants
The earlier Yashica-Mat 124, made until 1970, has a pull-and-turn pressure plate and a square-pattern covering. The 124G has a sliding pressure plate, pebble-grain leatherette and some electrical changes. Both take 120 and 220.
Battery
Many meters from the 1960s and 70s were built for 1.35 V mercury cells like the PX625, which held a steady voltage until almost flat. Mercury cells went off sale after EU and US laws in the 1990s, and a 1.55 V silver-oxide or alkaline cell can throw readings off in a meter that doesn't regulate voltage. There are three fixes. Zinc-air hearing-aid cells give 1.35 V but die within a few months. An adapter like the MR-9 uses a small circuit to drop a silver-oxide cell to 1.35 V. The meter was built for a 1.3 V mercury cell that's no longer sold, so it needs a zinc-air replacement or a battery adapter to read correctly. On a camera this old, the light seals and the leaf shutter's slow speeds are the other things to check.
Buying guide
We'd buy the US kit titled tested and working at $321 delivered, well under the band, or the US one titled refurbished and CLA'd at $550 if you'd rather start with a serviced shutter. There are more than 120 for sale, most asking $430–600 delivered, and Japan dealers' "Meter Works" bodies fill the band with $60–130 shipping on top. The shutter is mechanical, so it fires without a battery, and the cell only runs the meter. That meter was built for a 1.3 V mercury cell that's no longer sold, so it needs a zinc-air replacement or an adapter to read correctly, and you should ask which battery the seller used. Ask for a video at 1 s looking into the taking lens and a backlit photo of the bottom lens, since listings here are titled with haze and a slow shutter. Skip the $1,050 "Unused in Box" example, about twice the median.
