Rolleiflex · Medium-format TLR · 1960–1981
The 2.8F is the last and most complete of Franke & Heidecke's classic f/2.8 Rolleiflexes, made from 1960 to 1981, and about 82,200 were made. It brought a meter coupled to the controls, a selenium cell that needs no battery with its readout in the focus knob, and a removable focusing hood. Behind the 80 mm f/2.8 taking lens, a Zeiss Planar or a Schneider Xenotar depending on the camera, is a Synchro-Compur leaf shutter running 1 second to 1/500. From the end of 1965 it takes 220 as well as 120, and a Rolleikin adapter lets it shoot 35mm. Collectors look for the White Face, made from mid-1971 with a plain front plate reading Rollei-Werke Franke & Heidecke. There were also later gold Aurum and Platinum editions in runs of about 1,500 and 500.
The variants
The 2.8E before it, made 1956–1959, has an uncoupled selenium meter. The 2.8F added the coupled meter and a removable hood, took 220 film from the end of 1965, and got the plain White Face front plate from mid-1971.
The selenium meter makes its own current, so a dead or weak one can't be fixed with a battery and needs a specialist or a handheld meter instead. After this many decades, slow leaf-shutter speeds and haze in the lenses are the other usual problems.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 2.8F Planar titled film tested and Near MINT at $2,179 delivered from Japan, or the White Face Planar titled CLA'd and MINT+++ with its case at $2,850 with free shipping. There are about 80 for sale, almost all from Japan dealers, and most ask $2,900–3,900 delivered, with White Face cameras mostly asking more. It needs no battery, and its selenium meter makes its own current, so a dead meter can't be fixed with a battery and means a specialist or a handheld meter. Ask whether the needle in the focus knob swings toward a bright window, for a video at 1 s and 1/500 looking into the taking lens, and for a backlit photo through both lenses to check for haze. Skip the 95.1% seller's $2,150 listing, where $480 of the price is shipping.
