In 1982 Nikon took the FM and gave it a much faster shutter. The FM2's mechanical shutter runs from 1 s to 1/4000 s, and its blades cross the frame in 3.3 milliseconds, about half the time of other metal shutters of the day. Early ones have etched titanium blades in a honeycomb pattern, and from 1989 Nikon switched to aluminium. Only the meter needs batteries, so it shoots at every speed with dead cells. That's a big reason Nikon kept making it until 2001, long after many 1980s electronic cameras had left the market and stopped working. Steve McCurry is said to have shot his 1985 Afghan Girl cover for National Geographic on one. For collectors there's the FM2/T, with titanium plates and back, sold from 1993 to 1997.
The variants
The first FM2 syncs flash at 1/200 s. The FM2n that followed a year or two later syncs at 1/250 s and has a red 250 on the speed dial, but it's still marked FM2 on the front, so look for an N before the serial number. The FM2/T of 1993–1997 has titanium top and bottom plates and back.
The FM2 has no famous weak spot, and its long run is credited to the all-mechanical design. Problems on these bodies come from age and storage, so check the shutter at both ends of the dial, the seals and the meter.
Buying guide
We'd buy an FM2n titled working or tested. One asks $408 delivered from a US seller, and a Japan kit with a 50mm f/1.4 asks $567, under the median. There are at least 220 listed, and most ask $500–650 delivered, nearly all from Japan dealers who title the FM2n the New FM2. Only the meter needs its two SR44 or LR44 cells, and the shutter fires from 1 s to 1/4000 without them. Ask for a back-open video at 1/4000 and 1 s, and look at the blades in a photo for bends or dents. An N before the serial number means the FM2n with 1/250 s flash sync, and the titanium FM2/T asks $580 to $1,130 here.
