The F2 replaced the original Nikon F in September 1971 and was Nikon's professional camera until the F3 took over in 1980. Nikon made 816,000 of them. The body is entirely mechanical, with a titanium-curtain shutter from 1 s to 1/2000 s plus B and T, and a self-timer that doubles as a slow timer from 2 to 10 s. The model name changes with the finder on top, from the plain DE-1 prism through the metered Photomic heads, and the last DP-12 meters down to EV −2. Photojournalists carried it through the later years of the Vietnam War, and one reporter's F2 sits in Istanbul's Harbiye Military Museum. Rarer versions include the titanium F2T and F2 Titan, the F2 Data with its time-stamping back, and the pellicle-mirror F2H.
The variants
The name follows the finder. DE-1 makes a plain F2, DP-1 an F2 Photomic, DP-2 an F2S, DP-3 an F2SB, DP-11 an F2A and DP-12 an F2AS. The DP-1, DP-2 and DP-3 need lenses with the coupling prong, and the A and AS finders read AI lenses.
The mechanical body has no famous weak spot. The meter lives in the finder, which has its own cells and circuit, so a listing can pair a healthy body with a finder that won't read.
Buying guide
We'd buy an F2 Photomic titled tested or meter works, and $230 to $306 delivered gets a body with a metered finder. There are at least 210 listed, and most ask $270–450 delivered, almost all from Japan dealers. The name follows the finder, from the plain DE-1 eye-level prism and the DP-1 Photomic up to the DP-12 of the F2AS, which asks the most here. The body is fully mechanical and fires at every speed with no battery, and the two SR44 or LR44 cells only run the finder's meter. That meter is its own circuit, so a healthy body can come with a finder that won't read, and "meter works" in a title counts for a lot. With a DP-1, DP-2 or DP-3 finder, check the lens has the coupling prong on its aperture ring.
