Konica · 35mm rangefinder · From 1965
Konica's Auto S2 came out in 1965 as the follow-up to the 1963 Auto S, a full-size rangefinder with a fast 45 mm f/1.8 Hexanon of six elements in four groups and a Copal SVA leaf shutter from 1 s to 1/500 s. Konica moved the CdS cell to the ring around the front of the lens, so the lens cap covers it and stops the battery draining, and readings stay correct with a filter fitted. You set the shutter speed and the camera picks the aperture, or you set both yourself. Konica's ads claimed the lens alone was worth the price, and one reviewer found it sharp, with one of the quietest shutters he'd used. It's a solid 750 g. Montgomery Ward sold it as the Wards am551, and in Europe it was the Revue Auto S2.
The variants
It replaced the 1963 Auto S. The later Auto S2 New, or EL, has an improved take-up spool for easier loading. Montgomery Ward sold it as the Wards am551, and Foto-Quelle sold it in Europe as the Revue Auto S2 and Auto S22.
Battery
Many meters from the 1960s and 70s were built for 1.35 V mercury cells like the PX625, which held a steady voltage until almost flat. Mercury cells went off sale after EU and US laws in the 1990s, and a 1.55 V silver-oxide or alkaline cell can throw readings off in a meter that doesn't regulate voltage. There are three fixes. Zinc-air hearing-aid cells give 1.35 V but die within a few months. An adapter like the MR-9 uses a small circuit to drop a silver-oxide cell to 1.35 V. Or a repairer can recalibrate the meter for silver oxide. More on batteries and meters.
The meter was designed for a 1.3 V mercury cell that's no longer made, so readings depend on what cell is fitted. Some lenses are a little wobbly, which several reviewers report, and a leaf shutter this old should be checked at every speed.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Auto S2 titled tested at $103 delivered, since it's the only one in the band with a test claim. There are about 48 listed, mostly from US sellers, and most ask $60–120 delivered, with untested ones from $36. The Copal leaf shutter fires without a battery, and the cell only runs the meter. That meter was built for a 1.3 V mercury cell that's no longer made, so a 1.5 V silver cell will read off unless you use a zinc-air cell or an adapter. Ask for a back-open video at 1 s, 1/8 and 1/500, and a flashlight-through-the-lens photo to check for haze. A 52mm in a title is the filter size, since every Auto S2 has the same 45mm f/1.8 Hexanon. Skip the zero-feedback seller and the $199 one from Italy, nearly three times the median.
$61.00est. delivered
The lowest delivered Auto S2 not sold as untested or for parts, at $61 from a US seller. There's no test claim either, so ask for a back-open video at 1 s and 1/500 and a photo through the rangefinder.
