Pentax · 35mm SLR · About 1980 to the mid 1980s
The ME Super followed Pentax's 1977 ME and kept its small body, 445 g without a lens, while adding a manual mode. You set the aperture and it picks a speed from 4 s to 1/2000 s on a vertical metal Seiko shutter. In manual you step through speeds with two buttons on the top plate instead of a dial. The finder is bright at 0.95x and shows the shutter speed, whether you chose it or the camera did, but never the aperture. Take the batteries out and it still fires at 1/125 s and B. Later, more automated Pentax bodies lost that mechanical fallback, and that fallback is part of why the ME Super stayed popular. There's also a chrome-only ME Super SE with a diagonal split-image screen.
The variants
The ME of 1977 came first, and the ME F of 1981 is an autofocus derivative. The MV and MV1 are simpler models, and the ME Super SE is a chrome-only special edition with a diagonal split-image screen.
With dead or missing cells it still fires at 1/125 s and sounds normal while the finder LEDs stay dark, so a camera that seems fine can expose blank or badly underexposed film. Every speed except 1/125 s and B needs good batteries.
Buying guide
We'd buy the ME Super titled tested with a 50mm f/1.4 and a 28mm f/2.8 at $96 delivered, or the $75 one with a Tokina AT-X 35-70mm f/2.8 titled with a working light meter. There are at least 140 for sale, nearly all in the US, and most ask $80–130 delivered. It needs its two 1.5 V SR44 or LR44 cells for every speed except 1/125 s and B, and with dead cells it still fires and sounds normal, so "fires" or "shutter works" proves nothing here. Look for a titled working meter, or ask for a video of the finder LEDs changing with the light. Skip the US one titled new seals at $282 and the Japan MINT kit at $520, which ask three and five times the median.
